SUMMARY:Love & Lust
DESCRIPTION:Cabaret and Cocktails and ProArts Theater present \nLOVE & LUST \nLove & Lust: A Burlesque Tease\, an evening of dance\, song\, comedy\, and burlesque. Taking you from the cheeky side of love to the naughty side of lust and everywhere in between\, this show will be sure to satisfy your needs! \nTickets will be $20 in advance\, $25 at the door. \nMarch 11 \nONE NIGHT ONLY \nDoors open at 7:30pm \nShow starts at 8:00pm \n  \n\nAttending Your First Burlesque Show: What to Expect\n\nIn last week’s blog\, we offered inspiration for your attire for those of you who are new to attending burlesque shows. This week we decided to follow up on a similar theme\, by taking a look at what to expect when attending your first show as an audience member.\nIt’s worth noting that due to the worldwide rise of burlesque over the last few years\, there are many different kinds of shows out there. From seated ‘dinner and a show’ affairs to shows that merge with club nights\, to small\, local pub shows\, to massive festivals hosting performers from all over the world and much more. Thus\, not every show is the same\, so we will be making some generalisations here. \nArrive in Plenty of Time\nLet’s set the scene to begin with. Most shows open their doors between 30 minutes to an hour before the show begins. This gives the audience time to arrive\, mingle\, find their seats if it’s a seated event\, get drinks and get comfortable before the stage action begins. It’s generally a good idea to get in before the show starts if you can; obviously this varies depending on the venue and set-up (you might be lucky and be able to sneak in unnoticed at the back if you’re late) but nobody wants to be that person trying to enter quietly and having to push through (especially if your seats are in the front row) once the show has begun. \nThe Host with the Most\n \nAs a general rule\, burlesque shows are hosted by a compère or host. These fabulously engaging\, multi-talented individuals are tasked with the enormous job of basically being the glue that holds the show together. They create a rapport with the audience\, they introduce the acts and if they’re good\, they weave a seamless magic that flows through the show making everything gel just right. If they have additional skills (for example\, many hosts are also singers) then they’ll often drop in a performance or two of their own between the other acts. Without the host\, you’d be looking at a series of disjointed\, seemingly random performances with nothing to tie them all together\, so the role of the compère is crucial. \nWhat’s In a Show?\nBurlesque shows are often split into two or three sections\, with intervals between to allow the audience to top up their refreshments and powder their noses and whatnot. Each section will be comprised of a number of acts; if it’s a cabaret or variety show (as opposed to strictly burlesque) then\, as well as striptease acts\, you might see magicians\, comedians\, circus acts and more. \nAnd so we conclude this week’s blog\, we hope it’s been informative! In our next blog we’ll be taking a look at audience etiquette at a burlesque show\, with some handy hints on do’s and don’ts when going to see a show. In the meantime\, if you missed our previous blog and you’re looking for some ideas for what to wear when you’re going to see a show\, check it out here: \n\n\nABC How To: Dress For a Burlesque Show \n

SUMMARY:The Ground Floor
DESCRIPTION:The Groud Floor with Crystal Belcher \nThe top floor isn’t the only tier that’s the SUITEst. Bring it down a level and get GROUNDed. Combine modern movements\, floor-otic flows\, acrobatic executions\, intricate threading and expressive choreography to extend across and around space.  Going Up? Why not take it down…to the Ground Floor… \n*The use of knee pads\, leg warmers\, over-the-knee socks\, heels and or bare feet may be needed at any given time.  No experience necessary. \nSunday\, November 20\, 2:30-3:30pm \n$35 \n \nMinimum 4 students\, maximum 12.  Pre-registration required. \n \n Athleticism\, adventure and artistry have always been recurring characteristics of Ms. Crystal Belcher aka “CryStylez.” Crystal has an extensive history of dancing\,  cheering\, co-ed competitive sports and dance fitness. Since 2010\, she has been a student of pole\, an instructor\, personal trainer and choreographer. \n    “CryStylez”  thrives on fluidity and showmanship\, alongside the thrill of expression and  transformation. Her aspirations are to inspire clients to enhance their visions of  fitness\, performance and/or dance with style! Not only does Crystal work to leave  a lasting impression\, she aims to spread that insight and perspective of  performance to up and coming artists. \n     It is not just about the tricks and transitions\, hyper-flexibility and strength moves\, \nit’s about creating moments and evoking emotions. \n  \nFloorwork looks great when done smoothly and in between pole dance moves…although it looks sexy and sensual\, it can be a graceful transition between tricks and spins like in the videos I’ve included on this page. \nTips for floorwork: \n1. Don’t rest all your weight on your knees. This can HURT! and not to mention darken or callous your knees. Try pressing the tops of your feet and your shins into the floor as opposed to resting everything on your kneecaps. \n2. Keep your movements fluid…visualize your body as liquid or a silk ribbon or even a beautiful snake moving slowly\, with control\, throwing in an accent here and there (like quick head flick or hair toss) and let the movement go through your ENTIRE body\, all the way out to your toes and fingertips. Visualizing helps you to let that undulating\, wavelike motion ripple through your bones and muscles. \n3. Incorporate the pole with your moves. You can push or slide your toes up and against the pole to get your leg high or do a low spin and go back down to the ground into more moves like a shoulder roll or hip circles while on your knees and lower legs. \nHow do I move on the floor and make it look pretty?\nThere’s three parts to this part of your routine: getting down\, moving on the floor and getting up. And it’s not just squatting down\, sliding around and standing back up! \nYou want your movements to be controlled and practiced but to have that heartfelt emotion that can flow through a dancer’s routine as well as all of the movements to flow together. \n1. Getting down. This is your transition down to where you will do your floor moves. Remember\, work this into your routine where it will flow with your music. This can be a slide down the pole into a squat\, a sexy squat or performing a spin where you land on your knees or in a side-sitting position. \n2. Sexy moves… This is a great way to add sensuality to your routine as well as give you breather in between all of those pole tricks! \nThere’s quite a few names for the moves here…like the ‘Sexy Pushup’\, the V-Toe slide\, the ‘Pump’ and ‘Barrel Rolls’. These are just a few and are illustrated in several dvd’s and video clips which I will try and include here. \nThis is where you can include some slow\, sensual and sexy moves that can look stunning and add some ‘wow’ to your dance. \n3. Getting back up. This does not include just pushing up unattractively off of the floor and standing up. One of the easiest ways to get up is to end up with the pole at your back and in a squatting position. Bring your knees together and slowly slide back up the pole with your eyes on your audience. \nYou can also perform this same ‘sexy get-up’ without the support of the pole. Just place your hands on your knees to balance your weight and bring your butt up first and twist slightly sideways.

SUMMARY:Beginner Pole Series - The Nibbler
DESCRIPTION:The Nibbler – Intro to Pole Dancing \n6-Week Beginner Pole Series \nSunday 11am-12:30pm\nOctober 16th- November 27 (no class Nov 13)\nCost: 6 week equipment pass – $170 plus tax\nMin 4; max 12\n\n\n\nJoin this 6 week series designed especially for beginners. Class begins with a full body warm-up  followed by conditioning exercises to help strengthen and stretch your pole muscles and core.  Each week you will learn an exciting new spin and transition on the pole.  By the end you’ll be comfortably dancing a flowy and gorgeous choreographed routine and beginning to climb off the ground.\n\nIf this is your first time\, PERFECT!  This is the right class for you!  Curious about what to expect?  Check out this article on What to Expect in Your First Class.\n\n\n\n8 Reasons to Try Pole Dancing:\n\n\n1. It’s Risqué
\n“The stereotype of what pole dancing means to the majority of people\, although changing and getting better every day\, is part of the allure to some women\,” says instructor Tracy Traskos\, of NY Pole. It’s also a great conversation topic at parties or even at work. \n2. It’s like Role Playing\nBesides the fact that you get to wear 6-inch stilettos when you work out\, you also get to be a sex siren for an hour. Coupled with building the leg and arm strength needed to climb the pole and hold yourself up and the coordination to follow the choreography\, you get to do moves like head and hip rolls\, mimicking the sexy dancers you often see at strip clubs (while toning at the same time!) \n3. Female Bonding\n“Women who take the classes together create great friendships while bonding over the fun of pole dancing\,” Traskos says. “Also\, no one is catty or judgmental so it’s a place you can be free to look foolish if you want to!” \n4. It’s an Accomplishment
\n“Participants feel like they have accomplished something great they never really thought possible\,” Traskos says. Plus\, it’s a safe\, fun\, and effective way to learn the art of pole dancing. At an advanced level\, pole dancing is both a cardio and strength workout\, which can burn 800 calories an hour or more! \n5. You Get Individual Attention
\nRather than group fitness classes\, where one instructor is often teaching a dozen participants or more\, pole dancing classes are smaller and more intimate. You get a lot of individual attention from the instructor\, similar to personal training sessions. \n6. It’s Much Harder than it Looks \n“This aspect of it builds confidence and improves body image and the ability to tackle other seemingly out of reach goals in life\,” Traskos says. “This confidence inevitably blends into other areas of your life\, including relationships.” \n7. It’s Four Exercises in One\n“[Pole dancing] effectively combines strength training\, endurance\, and flexibility training into one fun activity\,” Traskos says. “It’s yoga\, Pilates\, TRX\, and Physique 57 all wrapped into one. And in high heels!” \n8. It Teaches the Power of Bodyweight Workouts\n“Most woman work way harder in pole class than in the gym\,” says Traskos\, who was a personal trainer for 15 years before joining the team at NY Pole. “There is a time and place for the gym\, but pole appeals to women who hate the gymmor never even go. And most of the exercises we do\, like climbing the pole\, are a lot tougher than doing biceps curls.”

SUMMARY:Tribal Fusion Belly Dancing Series
DESCRIPTION:Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Series with Lynette Day \n4-week Series \nSundays\, August 7-28\, 1-2:30pm \n$70 for 4 classes \nREGISTER HERE! \nLynette Day offers a therapeutic approach to learning belly dance! \nLearn to coordinate\, strengthen\, and condition your body to decrease the affects  of the aging process and to increase self-confidence and body image. \n \nBelly-Dance is good for you\nby Angelique\nhttp://www.angeliqueandfriends.com/good.html \nMany people are surprised to learn that Middle-Eastern Dance\, commonly known as “belly-dance\,” involves much more than the belly! In fact\, belly-dance can benefit many parts of the body. Here are some of the health benefits of Middle-Eastern Dance: \n\nExercising the carrying muscles without impact. A belly-dancer uses her quadriceps\, hamstrings and glutes to hold her steady as she performs hip movements or travels smoothly across the floor. However\, even though she gets a great lower-body workout\, the amount of impact to her knees and ankles is minimal. Impact is measured not only by how hard our feet strike the ground\, but by how much stress is placed on our joints. Using this measure\, most of Middle-Eastern dance is considered non-impact; some tribal and folk dances are low-impact.\nBuilding the back muscles evenly. Belly-dancers use their torsos a lot-much more than ballet\, modern or tap dancers. Only jazz dancers come close to our use of rib movements and undulations. These movements\, coupled with shoulder movements\, exercise the back muscles\, and they exercise the muscles evenly. Strong back muscles prevent back injuries\, and they promote good posture as well.\nExercising the arms. New belly-dance students are always surprised by much they have to use their arm muscles. Belly-dancers have to hold their arms up for long periods of time\, and it actually takes quite a lot of strength to perform arm movements slowly and gracefully.\nAiding digestion. It’s true! Exercising the abdominal area\, not just by rolling the belly\, but also by swaying the torso\, helps food move along the digestive system. Any form of exercise will have this effect to some degree\, but belly-dance is especially good for this purpose.\n\nREAD MORE HERE!

Contortion acts often accompany acrobatics\, circus acts\, street performers and other live performing arts. Contortion acts are typically performed in front of a live audience. An act will showcase one or more artists performing a choreographed set of moves or poses\, often to music\, which require extremeflexibility. The physical flexibility required to perform such acts greatly exceeds that of the general population. It is the dramatic feats of seemingly inhuman flexibility that captivate audiences. In some countries such as Russia and Mongolia contortion holds special cultural significance.

SUMMARY:Dance Your Way to the Top
DESCRIPTION:Dance Your Way To The Top \nWith Guest Instructor Michelle Natoli! \nThis workshop examines some of the more creative and intricate ways to make your way up the pole. All too often we are simply trying to gain enough height to execute that big move. In these 90 minutes we will look at some complex climb sequences that will make you look and feel like you are dancing your way to higher ground. Why just climb when you can ascend?! Best suited for Intermediate level and up. Minimum of 8! \n  \nMichelle Natoli Bio: \nMichelle Natoli is a New York based pole dance/fitness instructor and performer who has been teaching Pilates for over a decade. She currently teaches pole classes at Body & Pole while continuing to operate ABsolution Pilates\, which she opened in 2005. \nWith a background in gymnastics and a degree in Theater from Fordham University at Lincoln Center\, it was inevitable that she would fall instantly in love with pole dancing as it marries the two passions she had previously felt she was forced to choose between. Her pole dance journey began six years ago and since then she has had the luxury of training under some of the industry’s best athletes/artists. \nMichelle was chosen as a Top 10 Finalist in the 2012 US Pole Dance Federation Amateur Championships and competed in the Female All Star Division of the National Aerial Pole Art Championship 2013. She placed 3rd in the Professional Level 4 Division of Pole Sport Organization’s Atlantic Pole Championship 2013. A few months later Michelle placed 2nd at the Pole Classic at Pole Expo 2013. In 2014 she represented the United States in the III Pole World Cup @ Arnold Classic Brazil and Paragon: An International Pole Dance Championship. Michelle is the first ever IDSA World Pole Dace Championship at Sport Standard Silver Medalist. She is a Brand Ambassador for PoleFit by Bad Kitty. \nShe is X-Pert certified and is also one of the first ever ElevatED certified instructors. Michelle combines her extensive background in core strengthening and alignment with her passion for pole dance to create a learning experience that is dynamic\, challenging\, and fun. \nLinks to recent performances:
